Companies around the world are facing “business unusual” as they experience the aftershocks of a global pandemic and a devastating war rages in Europe. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in the largest forcible displacement of people in Europe since the 1940s, while individuals and firms face unprecedented increases in the prices of energy and food. At the same time, supply chains continue to be upended by the Covid-19 pandemic, and many companies have accumulated record levels of debt, often as a result of loans issued with favourable terms. The Transition Report, EBRD’s annual flagship report, titled “Business Unusual” examines those various exceptional circumstances in turn, discussing their implications for public policy.

Helena Schweiger is an Associate Director, Lead Research Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London. She is currently working on globalisation at a crossroads chapter of the EBRD Transition Report. Her current research focuses on CEO time use and firm performance, green management practices and investments, and green economy transition. She holds a PhD in Economics from University of Maryland, College Park.

Marcin Tomaszewski is a Principal Regional Economist for the EU region at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Previously, he worked for the Center for Social and Economic Research CASE in Warsaw. He graduated from the University of Goettingen and the Warsaw School of Economics.
